{"id":2612,"date":"2016-12-03T21:19:53","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T02:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/caslabs.case.edu\/ansmet\/?p=2612"},"modified":"2016-12-15T20:06:47","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T01:06:47","slug":"whole-lotta-shakedown-going-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caslabs.case.edu\/ansmet\/2016\/12\/03\/whole-lotta-shakedown-going-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Whole lotta shakedown going on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi all, \u00a0a short post to let you know we&#8217;ve returned to McMurdo after our shakedown trip. \u00a0The baseline purpose of this trip is to try out the essential camping gear the ANSMET team needs; \u00a0the actual, individual tents, sleeping bags, snowmobiles, stoves, propane lines, booties&#8230;.. \u00a0all of it. \u00a0And while some do just fine with inspection of their gear back home, or in the warm spaces of the BFC or Crary Lab, \u00a0we know that a true ovenight shakedown trip away from McMurdo is the best guarantee that things work. \u00a0 So that&#8217;s what we did. \u00a0We left McMurdo just before noon on Saturday and returned 24 hours later. \u00a0The itinerary this time wasn&#8217;t as deep in crevasse travel and rescue techniques as in the\u00a0past, \u00a0but the need for that has diminished over the last decade. Those were designed to mitigate a serious threat during long (sometimes days-long) \u00a0overland traverses, which are now mostly replaced with air travel.
