A critical piece of field gear\u2026.and one of my favorite things<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019m wrapping up my final preparations for Antarctica, and enjoying the long weekend with my family \u2013 my kids traveled home to see me off. \u00a0 \u00a0I am inspired by Nicole\u2019s posting, and \u00a0the awesome podcast (<\/span>https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mediacast\/jpl\/season-two-episode-8-diamonds-in-the-ice<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So\u00a0I invited my son Jacob, a journalist, to help me draft a blog entry. \u00a0His normal beat is\u00a0the Middle East, so the culture of Antarctica (and how that intersects his mom) is a stretch assignment. \u00a0He suggested a Q&A. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Q: Mom -This is your second jaunt to Antarctica, what is it that you’re most looking forward to?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

A: For sure it’s hanging out with the team – John, Brian and Jim for the second time, and getting to know\/sharing secrets with my new teammates<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What secrets?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

A: How much butter I can eat, how much bacon I crave and how many socks I am bringing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Can you talk more about socks?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

A: It turns out I have a lot of socks – I kinda feel like Imelda Marcos of socks (Cindy\u2019s note: \u00a0a ca. 1987 reference to the lavish shoe collection of the former first lady of the Philippines). \u00a0I plan to have socks for every occasion. My toes will be toasty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What do you hope to accomplish?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

A: Find lots of rocks from space. My colleagues at JSC are afraid that I’ll find too many terrestrial rocks or too many itty bitty ordinary chondrites. \u00a0But there are never too many meteorites.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Our conversation went on\u00a0to discussions about the meteorite collection, and details of daily life on the ice (Jacob\u2019s Q: Perhaps, I shouldn’t be asking this because I’m your son – how do you go to the bathroom? \u00a0 When I provided the answer, his response was \u00a0– OK \u2013 I won\u2019t ask further).\u00a0 He wrapped up the interview with the question below:<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Mom – when you’re out on the ice sheet, what is it that you’re most looking forward to regarding coming back<\/em>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A: Taking a shower, wearing flip flops, reuniting and breaking bread with family & friends.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
