It was hard to see much outside. Brian (in the background) looks only slightly more impressed.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our team called Johnny and he told us a bit about a dinner with other OAE\u2019s, which we learned was short for Old Antarctic Explorers. It was Christmas in Bellingham, Washington, where he lives. Some of John\u2019s friends started coming down to the Ice in the 70s and 80s, like he did. We also learned there\u2019s an OAE club you can join after you\u2019ve been to the ice before. We\u2019re all excited to become OAE\u2019s in a few weeks time, after we redeploy back to the States, not to mention to be starting (or rekindling) our Antarctic careers and following in John\u2019s and other\u2019s footsteps.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4512\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4512\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4512 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/artscimedia.case.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/111\/2023\/12\/27093718\/daniela-and-lauren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #333399\"><em>Daniela and Lauren enjoying the hike.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We couldn\u2019t get the video working, so John was \u201cnot able to show us [his] smiling face.\u201d But we were all smiles talking to him, and wish him well on his snowshoeing adventure this week as we prep to go to our own frozen wonderland in Davis Ward soon. And to make room for cake, some of us took a walk almost to Scott Base, were we got a glimpse of the pressure ridges.
