{"id":1112,"date":"2020-10-06T18:58:25","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T22:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/caslabs.case.edu\/sparlab\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2021-01-08T18:22:19","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T23:22:19","slug":"boys-town-national-research-hospital-partners-with-hampton-case-western-reserve-universities-on-diversity-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caslabs.case.edu\/sparlab\/boys-town-national-research-hospital-partners-with-hampton-case-western-reserve-universities-on-diversity-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Boys Town National Research Hospital Partners with Hampton, Case Western Reserve Universities on Diversity Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was first published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearingreview.com\/inside-hearing\/industry-news\/communication-2\">The Hearing Review<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boystownhospital.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Boys Town National Research Hospital<\/a>\u00a0announced support for a program designed to improve minority representation in speech-language pathology and audiology graduate programs, clinics, and research at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamptonu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Hampton University\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Case Western Reserve University.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IMPACT (Innovative Mentoring and Professional Advancement through Cultural Training) Program is \u201ca 1-year program that will provide formal mentoring to students in communication sciences programs from underrepresented backgrounds.\u201d According to Boys Town\u2019s announcement, mentorship will be provided by diverse faculty at research-intensive universities and hospitals to enhance practical learning opportunities through research training, communication skills development, and formal test preparation to improve the students\u2019 readiness in graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overarching goal of the IMPACT Program is to begin to train the next generation of speech-language pathology and audiology leaders who encompass inclusion, diversity, and compassion,\u201d said co-collaborators Jessica Sullivan, PhD at Hampton University and Lauren Calandrucio, PhD, at Case Western Reserve University.<\/p>\n<p>Boys Town Hospital researchers, Monita Chatterjee, PhD and Daniel Rasetshwane, PhD will join students in September for a virtual \u201cfamily dinner\u201d where they will discuss their experiences as prominent scientists from underrepresented minority groups. On October 22, multiple investigators from Boys Town Hospital Research will be conducting virtual lab tours and providing an overview of what it\u2019s like to be part of the research team.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan McCreery, PhD, director of research, and Lori Leibold, PhD, director of hearing research, will be supporting IMPACT Program initiatives at Boys Town National Research Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Leibold explains that \u201cBoys Town Hospital is committed to promoting inclusion and diversity. The IMPACT Program will give students who are traditionally underrepresented in hearing and language sciences insight into their fields of interest and prepare them to join the next generation of researchers and clinicians.
