The research of the BiSC lab focuses on how the brain controls communication and swallowing. Our goal is to optimize evaluation and treatment methods and to improve quality of life for individuals with communication and/or swallowing disorders.

Dr. Rachel Mulheren is the director of the BiSC Lab. She received a B.A. in Russian and Linguistics from the University of Virginia. She completed her graduate studies in Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University, where she worked with Dr. Christy Ludlow in the Neural Bases of Communication and Swallowing Laboratory. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she worked with Dr. Marlis Gonzalez-Fernandez in the Swallowing Investigation in Physiology Laboratory. She joined the Communication Sciences program at Case Western Reserve University as an Assistant Professor in 2018.
