Twin Otter flights to Davis-Ward

Today half of us got out to our field site – the Davis-Ward Nunataks. The transport was a terrific show of bush piloting and teamwork. We had two Twin Otter airplanes helping us move. Being smaller planes (two props instead of four), they carried a lot less cargo, but it still was a surprising amount of stuff. Besides tents, food, scientific equipment, and personal gear, they could also take a snowmobile! And a passenger or two. Loading a snowmobile onto these planes was quite sporty. It reminded us of loading a balky horse into a trailer. Each plane made three runs and now half of us are at Davis-Ward. This location is a lot colder and much more windy than CTAM. The wind is part of the reason that makes this site good for hunting meteorites as it scours the glaciers and leaves them in plain sight. Weather permitting and three more Twin Otter runs, we expect the rest of the team to join us in the morning. Caption 1: The two Twin Otters at CTAM being loaded.
