Christmas and Boxing Day Blogs

Christmas: The day dawned clear windy and cold (not exactly a surprise for Antarctica). Most of the team went for a recon drive over to a new ice field looking for Christmas Presents of the meteorite variety. Despite the unsearched area, pickings were slim, with only 5 meteorites bagged. While the team was out working, Ryan stayed in camp to thaw and prep the Christmas Turkey (and other sundry foods). Despite the short notice (our oven lacks a temperature setting so the turkey was done in half the time), the team pulled together an excellent dinner of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, and biscuits…with no bake cheesecake for dessert. An even more impressive feat was cramming 9 people and all that food into a 9 x 9 Scott Tent. Ryan wants to wish very special Christmas Greetings to his wife Nhat Anh in Vietnam, his Mom and siblings in Upstate New York and Knoxvegas, everyone he works with at JSC, and all all of his former work friends in St. Louis. Christine would like to wish a very merry Christmas to her family and all of her friends. Love to all of you!! Jim would like to say Merry Christmas to his daughter Dizzy and his wife Kris, and all the family in CO, MN, ND and FL! And of course I miss all of you and all the puppies too:) Vinciane souhaite un joyeux Noel a sa famille et a tous les lecteurs belges! Shannon would like to wish her husband, her family and her friends happy holidays. She also thanks everyone for the wonderful text messages. They are great to get! Devon would like to wish her family – in South Orange NJ, in Laguna Beach CA, and in central PA – very happy Christmas celebrations. And she hopes everyone in the EPS Planetary Geomorphology group is enjoying a nice holiday break. Boxing Day: Despite some windy weather, we got out in the field in the afternoon. We searched for meteorites in the trough, where we had had good success two days ago. We didn’t have quite he same success today (15 or so flagged), but it was certainly a worthwhile effort all the same. On the way back, we got to do some sightseeing, including posing for this group photo with Mt Ward in the background. We’re hoping for better weather tomorrow.
