Weather update from the field

Today the weather has gone from exciting to thrilling to nuts. I took another temperature and wind speed measurement: -3.3 degrees F at a whopping 52 mph. Morgan went out to grab some additional food from our boxes and said that she almost got knocked down by the wind at the tent edge, which apparently concentrates the wind’s diabolical powers. Before we left McMurdo we had heard that a storm system was moving in that might bring some rare snow to the coast by Thursday, so we’re thinking this weather in the Millers may be part of that. We have decided to make use of our time by melting huge quantities of snow for water (always good to stockpile in thermoses whenever possible) and making a “fancy” dinner. On the menu is curried lentils from scratch (i.e. dry lentils, not a dehy meal) along with some chicken breast we found in the leftover food stores from CTAM (a sparse camp used as an intermediate staging location for moving gear and people to remote field camps). It might be a wee bit past its technical expiration, but I’m confident that it’s been frozen at temperatures far lower than those reached in my freezer at home. Overall we’re in good spirits and staying warm, fed, and entertained!
