Cache Treasures

It was gray here today, which always makes it a little spooky and hard to see what you’re walking or driving over. That’s right – driving – we got onto the skidoos today and went for a ride! We rode out to an old Elephant Moraine camp cache to see what we could dig up, and we found the mother lode of flags and mogas. This cache had been here since 1996(!), so 20 years of drifting meant it was a good workout digging it all out. The flags were a nice neon, reminding us that fashion even hits the deep field of Antarctica. We’ll keep and use many of them, making for a brighter flag season this year. On the way back, we tried not to run over any giant sastrugi, upending our skidoos and riders, but with the low light and poor definition, that was a challenge. We also found a few more meteorites, including a substantially bigger one than we’ve found so far (cutie-sized), making us really excited. That brings our total to close to 20! Now we just need Jim and Alex. The weather was no t great in both places today, but it’s forecast to be clear tomorrow in McMurdo, so let’s hope it’s good here and a go for flight. Bring the boys home! – Jani 2 January 2017 PS – Many thanks to Sharon, Denise, Heidi and Robert, Natalie, Jade, Ralph, and David for the texts and BYU Geology for the notes! We always love little tastes of home out here in the wild. 🙂
