We are finished with meteorite hunting here at Davis Ward and have been packing up camp. A small twin otter plane stopped here this morning to fly about 800 pounds worth of stuff to McMurdo. I, along with Cindy, Nicole and Marc are scheduled to hop on a flight tomorrow to travel back to McMurdo on a bigger Basler plane, along with 4 snow machines and more stuff. The rest of the gang will catch a flight with the remaining the snow machines and gear on Saturday. We are leaving some things here at Davis Ward for future ANSMET seasons. We have made some major inventories: meteorites (total 346), meteorite collection gear, food (hundreds of oatmeal packets, 20 pepperoni packages, 30 soups, and much more food left over), and bathroom tent (thankfully many rolls of toilet paper left). Packing has been relatively painless because we have had beautiful weather, sunny and warm with little wind. Even warm enough to play some cribbage outside (pictures below)! We are hoping to good weather continues so our travels back to McMurdo go as planned. Our last days at Davis Ward have been wonderful! Part of me wants to stay here much longer, however it will certainly be nice to be home soon. The next post may be sent from McMurdo, where we have a lot of unpacking and cleaning to do.
